Over the past 10 years, I have worked with individuals across the lifespan—from toddlers developing early communication skills to adolescents and adults building independence, social, and daily living skills. What skills can be worked on in parent coaching?

Parent coaching is individualized to your child’s needs, your family’s routines, and the challenges you’re experiencing at home. During coaching, parents learn practical, evidence-based strategies they can use in everyday life to support their child’s development and reduce stress in the home.

Areas we can work on may include:

• Communication skills such as requesting wants and needs, increasing functional communication, and reducing frustration related to communication difficulties
• Challenging behaviors such as tantrums, aggression, noncompliance, elopement, whining, throwing, or other behaviors that may be interfering with daily life
• Potty training support using individualized behavioral strategies
• Daily living and independence skills such as dressing, brushing teeth, mealtime routines, cleaning up, following routines, and completing basic self-care tasks
• Play and social skills including turn-taking, imitation, engagement, and learning how to build interaction through play
• Transitions and routines such as bedtime, getting ready in the morning, leaving preferred activities, and moving through daily routines with less stress
• Following directions and cooperation to help make daily tasks and family routines feel more manageable
• Parent confidence and strategy implementation so you feel more prepared to respond consistently and effectively in the moments that matter most

Every family is different, which is why coaching is tailored to your child, your goals, and the situations you are navigating at home. The goal is not to hand you generic advice, but to give you practical tools, guidance, and support you can actually use in real life.

Why choose parent coaching over traditional ABA?

Traditional ABA can be incredibly beneficial for many families, but it isn't always the best fit for every child or every household. Parent coaching offers a different approach by putting parents at the center of the process and giving families direct access to a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Rather than your child's treatment being primarily carried out by a behavior technician, you'll work one-on-one with the clinician who has the expertise to assess behavior, develop intervention plans, and make individualized recommendations.

Why families choose parent coaching:

1. You work directly with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst

One of the biggest advantages of parent coaching is that every session is led by a BCBA. Instead of the BCBA primarily supervising treatment behind the scenes while a behavior technician provides day-to-day therapy, you'll receive individualized guidance directly from the expert designing your child's intervention. This allows for more collaboration, faster problem-solving, and strategies tailored specifically to your child and family.

2. With private-pay services you don't have to wait months for support

Many families spend months on waitlists for services. Parent coaching allows you to begin receiving expert guidance now instead of feeling stuck waiting for therapy to become available.

3. You learn how to help your child during real-life moments

Your child's biggest challenges often happen outside of therapy sessions—during meals, bedtime, transitions, playtime, community outings, or communication breakdowns. Parent coaching helps you confidently respond to these moments with practical, evidence-based strategies that fit naturally into your daily life.

4. You are with your child more than anyone else

Even with traditional ABA, therapists are only with your child for a limited number of hours each week. As a parent, you're present during the countless everyday interactions where learning happens. Parent coaching equips you with the skills to turn those everyday moments into meaningful opportunities for growth.

5. Progress happens throughout the day—not just during therapy

Instead of limiting learning to scheduled therapy sessions, parent coaching helps you incorporate skill-building into routines you're already doing, including meals, bath time, getting dressed, bedtime, play, community outings, and everyday communication opportunities.

6. It offers greater flexibility for your family

Some families prefer not to have providers in their home multiple days each week. Parent coaching provides professional support from a BCBA while giving you the flexibility to learn virtually or in person, depending on your location and preferences.

7. You receive truly individualized support

Parent coaching isn't about handing you a list of tips and hoping they work. Every family is different. Together, we'll identify your child's strengths, challenges, and your family's goals, then create practical strategies that fit your routines, values, and lifestyle.

At Guided Growth Training, the goal of parent coaching is to empower parents with the knowledge, confidence, and professional support needed to help their child succeed. By working directly with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, you'll gain the skills to create meaningful progress during the moments that matter most—not just during scheduled therapy sessions, but throughout your family's everyday life.
